Beginner’s Guide to Gardening in Parker

Planning your garden can be a great source of enjoyment, but it also comes with certain responsibilities, such as picking up the right seed variety and providing your plants with appropriate growing conditions. If you’re gardening in Parker, make sure that you choose the right vegetables for our climate!

Here are some the tips related to selecting flowers, vegetables and herbs in Parker, Colorado:

1.      Flower Seeds

It goes without saying that flowers are great for a lovely garden and provide a high rate of pollination. Using flowers seeds alongside your vegetable garden can raise the yielding potential. It can be hard to select between perennials or annuals. Whereas perennials make a comeback every season; annuals can be replaced and removed easily in the approaching season.

2.      Vegetables

Before you design your garden or begin gardening in Parker, make sure to select the right veggies keeping in mind the availability of space for them to grow and the growing conditions. Generally, you’ll want to plant after the last frost date, which can sometimes stretch well into May here! Many veggies can be started indoors from seed, and then transplanted outside once the temperatures warm up.

3.      Herbs

No garden is complete without a few herbs! Herbs not only add visual interest and aroma, but they can be used in daily cooking to elevate the flavors in your dish. Most herbs will need direct sunlight, but be careful that they don’t dry out if they get hit with intense afternoon sun. Water in the mornings or evenings so that the herb has time to absorb the moisture before it evaporates midday.

How is Planning Important?

For many beginners, it is a good idea to start with a smaller garden in place of a bigger one in case it ends up taking more time than anticipated. Make sure to leave ample space between flowers, vegetables and herbs so they can breathe properly and receive sufficient nutrition. Opt for varieties that can grow well in the given climatic conditions.

Make sure that you have high-quality soil in your garden area. Many soil mixtures are comprised of perlite, peat, and vermiculite, which provide ample nutrients for bedded plants. If you compost at home, it’s a great idea to mix your compost into the garden soil.

Some vegetables are meant for direct sowing, such as peas, carrots, beans, corn, pumpkins, etc. Some varieties, on the other hand, do a lot better starting indoors such as peppers, tomatoes and herbs. You don’t have to pay much attention to their seeds except time-to-time watering and these should be hardened before transplating them outside.
