Liquid Damaged Apple Devices? How to Fix Them
Content Provided by Experimax Parker
Apple devices are known to be more sophisticated than other products because they conform to the demands that people encounter in their daily lives. Earlier versions of Apple products lacked proper protection against water and other environmental factors. Now, Apple devices are better equipped to handle exposure to water; however, there are noteworthy distinctions between the types of water and elemental damage.
Understanding the difference between water-resistant, waterproof, splash-proof, etc.
Apple products are not waterproof. Many of their products are water-resistant. It should be noted that Apple, Inc.® states that “water resistance isn’t a permanent condition and may diminish over time.” There are some Apple products that can be submerged in shallow water (1-2 meters) for up to 30 minutes (swimming, showering, etc.). Whereas other products can only be exposed to a splash of water.
An Apple device that is splash-proof is not the same as a device that is swim-proof. In the event that your Apple device is exposed to water, do not plug in your Apple device until you are certain the product is completely dry. According to Apple, Inc. Support, consumers should wait at least five hours before charging or plugging in the device after being exposed to water.
If your device experiences liquid exposure, rinse the area with regular tap water if the liquid is anything other than water (i.e., soda, coffee, etc.). Then, wipe off your Apple device with a soft, lint-free cloth. Place your device so that it is facing down while drying (if more than just a splash of liquid exposure). Never use an external heat source to dry your Apple device.
For iPhone® devices and iPod® devices only
Most models of iPhone devices and iPod devices that were built after 2006 have built-in Liquid Contact Indicators (LCI) that will show whether the device has been in contact with water or another liquid.
According to Apple, Inc., “The LCI’s color is normally white or silver, but when it contacts water or a liquid containing water, it will turn red. An LCI won’t activate because of humidity and temperature changes that are within the product’s environmental requirements.” Apple device owners should review their device’s manual to understand how much liquid exposure a device can handle before its LCI changes color.
